ZOOKEEPER Lionfish: Pterois volitans & Pterois miles - Beautifully adorned fish in their natural habitat pose no threat to their marine ecosystem. Believed to have been introduced to the Atlantic Ocean in the mid-1980s by aquarium enthusiasts that released their "pets" off the East coast of Florida, Lionfish have become one of the biggest threats to our marine ecosystem. With no natural predators, a glutinous appetite, able to reproduce every four days, & up to 18 protective venomous spines, it's up to us to control their population to save our native fish and corals, that is: Until A Natural Predator Emerges. In 2011, while on the Island of Curacao, Allie set out to design a containment device for containing speared lionfish. The primary focus & design criteria were Diver Safety, with Efficiency being second. This device would be used by scuba divers that remove the invasive lionfish off the coral reefs. With safety the main issue, due to the lionfish's venomous spines, a diver must be able to contain the lionfish so that minimal harm comes to the diver. After various designs were tested, the Lionfish Containment Unit (LCU) was finalized. The LCU proved to be successful in allowing scuba divers to remove large quantities of lionfish safely. Its simple design & ease of use allowed divers to be more efficient in removing large amounts of lionfish, giving our marine ecosystem breathing room from these invasive species. In 2012, ZooKeeper was moved to Sarasota, Florida. Here, we re-designed the components, created plastic injection molds for each, and began production in March 2013. Hard body Lionfish Containment Unit is the safest way to collect lionfish & debris! ZooKeeper units are now the preferred containment unit of divers protecting the marine ecosystem, eliminating large numbers of lionfish. They are made with UV-resistant custom extruded PVC and ABS plastics. The safety valve allows water displacement to occur at the rear.

  • LCU - 20: 20" x 7.25" (capacity approximately 14 lbs.)
  • The ZooKeeper's capacities range from approximately 8-24 lbs. and makes containing lionfish, debris, lobster and other items safer while you continue to dive and hunt.
  • A slotted funnel allows you to quickly and easily place your catch into the ZooKeeper Lionfish container with your spear while keeping the items safely confined.
  • Custom extruded PVC tubes - Lightweight, Color, UV Resistor added to ABS/PVC for longer life
  • Can be multipurposed to contain other edible fish and even used for marine debris like fishing lines, hooks, cans, plastics, and other trash.
